The injury-riddled New York Mets got some good news Tuesday when a second examination of All-Star center fielder Carlos Beltran's bruised right knee also indicated surgery is not required. The opinion from Dr. Richard Steadman in Vail, Colo., was the same as the Mets' medical staff. Beltran likely will be out through the All-Star break while waiting for the bone bruise to subside.

A judge sentenced Denver Nuggets guard J.R. Smith to 90 days in jail Tuesday night for causing an auto accident that killed his friend, though Smith will likely end up serving only 30. Municipal Judge Debra J. Gelson suspended 60 days of the sentence providing Smith performs 500 hours of community service consisting of visiting sick children at hospitals.

B.J. Upton, Carl Crawford and Willy Aybar hit solo homers and the Tampa Bay Rays won their seventh straight game, 4-1 over the Toronto Blue Jays 4-1 on Tuesday night. Matt Garza (6-5) allowed one run and seven hits in seven innings to win consecutive starts for the first time since April 30 and May 5.

Jake Peavy's injured right ankle was re-examined Tuesday, and the San Diego Padres ace could get his protective boot off in about two weeks. Peavy, the 2007 NL Cy Young Award winner, has been on the disabled list since June 13 with a strained tendon. He was injured running the bases against the Chicago Cubs in late May.

Jay Bouwmeester didn't wait for the start of free agency and signed a multiyear contract with the Calgary Flames on Tuesday. Flames general manager Darryl Sutter traded Jordan Leopold and a draft pick to the Florida Panthers at the NHL draft last weekend to acquire Bouwmeester's rights and get a head start on the competition for the 25-year-old star.
